In response to your needs, Willis Programs has developed the LawyerGuard Insurance Program. This program evolved from our 20+ years of experience in insuring attorneys all over the nation.

The LawyerGuard Program consists of three components:

Preferred Program for Defense Attorneys with 51% or more in the defense area of practice.
Standard Lawyers Professional.
Excess Lawyers Professional.

Mutual choice of counsel
Coverage for punitive damages on a “most favorable law” basis
Provides a 50% reduction in the deductible if the claim is settled through mediation (subject to a $25,000 maximum)
Offers an individual tail option whereby any lawyer is able to purchase an individual tail for a flat $1,500 when ceasing the practice of law
Crisis event coverage
Pre-claim assistance
No deductible for claims from pro bono work
A “soft” hammer clause
High loss of earnings and disciplinary defense coverage limits
Free retirement tail with no minimum retirement age
Free death/disability tails
1, 2, 3, 5 year and unlimited tail options included in policy
Express coverage for malicious prosecution under the definition of personal injury
Up to $10 million in capacity
Claim Expenses Outside Limits available to qualifying firms
Loss Only and Aggregate Deductibles available to qualifying firms

Defense Lawyers Professional
If the law firm qualifies for the DRI program (with 51% or more of its area of practice in defense work), it will also receive the following:

An endorsement to the policy that eliminates five exclusions
10% reduction in the deductible
Subpoena assistance coverage
An additional premium credit of 10-15%.

Coverage is provided on a non-admitted basis in ME, NH, OR & VT and available on an admitted basis in all other states.

LawyerGuard

LawyerGuard is designed for law firms of all sizes. Coverages are individually tailored to fit the needs of each law firm. Available in all states, except Oregon, subject to state filing requirements.

The Preferred Program for Defense Attorneys:
Designed for law firms engaged in at least 51% defense work.
Established in 1988 and endorsed by DRI - The Voice of the Defense Bar.
Open to DRI members and non-members.

Standard Lawyers Professional:
Full time or part-time private practice law firms
No more than 40% plaintiff work
No more than 20% real estate work

Excess Lawyers Professional:
Full follow form, admitted excess in 44 states, and surplus lines excess for CA, CT, HI, NY*, OR** and WA.
*Admitted excess available via NY Free Trade Zone for qualifying firms.
**Special surplus lines policy designed to go over OR State Bar Professional Liability Fund.
